1. Land, Districts, Rivers and Irrigation Projects
Telangana lies on the Deccan Plateau in south-central India. Two great rivers, the Godavari and the Krishna, flow through it, and many dams and lift irrigation projects use their water. This lesson covers the physical setting, districts, rivers and major projects.
Location, size and districts
- Telangana covers about 1.12 lakh square kilometres and is the 11th largest state of India by area. Its population was about 3.5 crore in Census 2011.
- It borders Maharashtra (north and north-west), Chhattisgarh (north-east), Andhra Pradesh (east and south) and Karnataka (west). It has no coastline.
- The state was formed with 10 districts. On 11 October 2016, 21 new districts were created, and Narayanpet and Mulugu were added in February 2019, making 33 districts.
- Telangana has 33 districts. District counts can change by government order, so check the latest figure before your exam.
- Hyderabad is the capital and the smallest district by area. The highest peak is Doli Gutta (about 965 m) on the Mulugu district border with Chhattisgarh.
The Godavari and its tributaries
- The Godavari enters Telangana from Maharashtra near Kandakurthi in Nizamabad district, where the Manjira and Haridra also meet it. Basara, with its Saraswati temple, is on its bank.
- The Manjira is a major tributary. The Nizam Sagar dam (Kamareddy district) and Singur dam are built on it.
- The Pranahita, formed by the Wardha and Wainganga, joins the Godavari at Kaleshwaram. Other tributaries include the Maner (Manair), Kinnerasani and Indravati.
- Bhadrachalam, with its famous Sri Rama temple, is on the Godavari in Bhadradri Kothagudem district before the river enters Andhra Pradesh.
The Krishna and its tributaries
- The Krishna enters Telangana from Karnataka in the south-west and later forms part of the border with Andhra Pradesh.
- The Bhima and Tungabhadra join the Krishna. The Musi, on whose banks Hyderabad stands, is a tributary of the Krishna; it joins the Krishna in south-eastern Telangana, near the Andhra Pradesh border.
- Other tributaries include the Dindi, Paleru and Munneru.
- Telangana and Andhra Pradesh share the Krishna water, and the Krishna River Management Board deals with matters between the two states.
Major dams and projects (stated neutrally)
- Nagarjuna Sagar: a large masonry dam on the Krishna on the Telangana-Andhra Pradesh border (Nalgonda side). Its foundation stone was laid in 1955.
- Srisailam dam on the Krishna and Priyadarshini Jurala project (Jogulamba Gadwal district) are other Krishna projects.
- Sriram Sagar Project (Pochampad), on the Godavari in Nizamabad district, irrigates large areas of north Telangana.
- The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project on the Godavari, starting at the Medigadda (Lakshmi) barrage near the Pranahita confluence, was inaugurated in 2019. It lifts water in many stages.
- In October 2023 some piers of the Medigadda barrage sank. The issue was examined by the National Dam Safety Authority and a judicial commission headed by Justice P. C. Ghose.
- The Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme is designed to take Krishna water to the southern districts.
