1. TGPSC and the Group 4 and Group 2 Exam Patterns

The Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) recruits staff for most Telangana state government posts. It was earlier called the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC). This lesson explains the name change, the pattern of the Group 4 and Group 2 exams, and where to find official information. Patterns can change from one notification to the next, so always read the notification for your post.

TGPSC: the basics

  • The commission was set up after Telangana became a state on 2 June 2014. Its office is at Prathibha Bhavan, Nampally, Hyderabad.
  • In May 2024 the Telangana government ordered that the abbreviation 'TG' replace 'TS' for the state in all official use. After this, TSPSC began using the name TGPSC.
  • The official website is www.tgpsc.gov.in. Notifications, One Time Registration (OTR), hall tickets, answer keys and results are published there.
  • Old documents, books and many coaching websites still say 'TSPSC'. Both names refer to the same commission.
  • Trust only the official website and the notification PDF. Beware of fake job messages on social media.

Group 4 exam pattern (Junior Assistant and similar posts)

  • Group 4 covers posts such as Junior Assistant, Junior Accountant, Junior Auditor, Typist and Ward Officer in different departments.
  • Paper I, General Knowledge (General Studies): 150 questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes.
  • Paper II, Secretarial Abilities: 150 questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes. Total for both papers: 300 marks.
  • Paper I covers current affairs, general science, environment, geography and economy of India and Telangana, the Indian Constitution, modern Indian history, Telangana history and movement, Telangana society and culture, and state policies.
  • Paper II covers mental ability (verbal and non-verbal), logical reasoning, comprehension, rearranging sentences in a passage, and numerical and arithmetical ability.
  • Questions are objective multiple choice on an OMR sheet. The notification states the languages of the question paper (usually English and Telugu, and often also Urdu).

Group 2 exam pattern

  • Group 2 covers posts such as Deputy Tahsildar, Assistant Section Officer, Municipal Commissioner (Grade III), Sub-Registrar and Excise Sub-Inspector.
  • It has four objective papers. Each paper has 150 questions and 150 marks, so the total is 600 marks.
  • Paper I: General Studies and General Abilities (current affairs, science, geography, history, Telangana society and culture, reasoning, basic English).
  • Paper II: History, Polity and Society. Paper III: Economy and Development (India and Telangana).
  • Paper IV: Telangana Movement and State Formation, in three phases: the idea of Telangana (1948 to 1970), mobilisation (1971 to 1990) and towards statehood (1991 to 2014).
  • Negative marking: coaching sites give different answers for past exams. The rule is printed in the 'scheme of examination' part of every notification, so check it there.

2. Preparation Plan and How This Course Maps to the Syllabus

A good plan turns a large syllabus into small daily tasks. This lesson shows which parts of this course match each part of the Group 4 and Group 2 syllabus, how to handle negative marking if your notification has it, and a simple 8-week plan.

How this course maps to the syllabus

  • Telangana history, culture and the statehood movement: the 'Telangana: History and Culture' module. This is very important for Group 2 Paper IV.
  • Geography and economy of Telangana: the 'Telangana: Geography and Economy' module, along with the Indian geography and economy modules of this course.
  • Telangana policies, schemes and administration: the 'Telangana: Administration, Schemes and Current Affairs' module.
  • Indian history, Constitution, science, static GK, aptitude, reasoning, English and computers: the national modules included in this course.
  • National and world current affairs: our free Current Affairs 2025 and Current Affairs 2026 courses.

Time and guessing in the exam hall

  • In Group 4, each paper has 150 questions in 150 minutes, so you get about 1 minute per question.
  • Answer the easy questions first, mark the doubtful ones, and return to them in a second round. Keep 10 minutes to check the OMR sheet.
  • If your notification has no negative marking, never leave a question blank. A guess can only help.
  • If your notification deducts marks for wrong answers, avoid blind guessing. Guess only when you can rule out at least one option.
  • Fill bubbles fully and darkly with the pen type allowed. Check that the question number and bubble row match.

A simple 8-week plan

  • Week 1: read the notification, finish this module and attempt one previous paper to know your level.
  • Weeks 2 and 3: Telangana history, culture and movement. Make a timeline from the Satavahanas to 2014.
  • Weeks 4 and 5: Telangana geography, economy, administration and schemes, with the national polity and economy modules.
  • Week 6: aptitude, reasoning and comprehension every day (Group 4 Paper II).
  • Weeks 7 and 8: current affairs of the last 12 to 18 months, full timed mock tests and revision of weak areas.
