1. RRB NTPC and Group D: Posts, Eligibility and Exam Pattern
Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) recruit staff for Indian Railways through Centralised Employment Notices (CEN). NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) and Group D (Level 1) are among the largest. Both use computer-based tests (CBT) with one-third negative marking. This lesson follows the recent (2024-25) notifications. Always read the CEN for your cycle on your regional RRB website (for example rrbbnc.gov.in for Bengaluru) before applying.
Posts and eligibility (broad picture)
- NTPC Graduate posts include Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist and Traffic Assistant. You need a degree.
- NTPC Undergraduate posts include Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk. You need to have passed Class 12.
- Group D (Level 1) posts include Track Maintainer, Assistant (various departments) and Pointsman. You generally need Class 10 or ITI/equivalent as stated in the notice.
- The minimum age is usually 18. The upper limit differs between graduate, undergraduate and Group D notices, with relaxation for reserved categories.
- Every post has a medical standard (for example eyesight categories). Check the medical category of a post before you choose it in your preference list.
RRB NTPC stages
- CBT 1 is common for all and only qualifying: 100 questions in 90 minutes. General Awareness 40, Mathematics 30, General Intelligence and Reasoning 30.
- CBT 2 decides merit: 120 questions in 90 minutes. General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35, General Intelligence and Reasoning 35. The level of questions is higher.
- Typist posts have a qualifying typing skill test on a computer.
- Station Master and Traffic Assistant posts need a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). Each test in CBAT has a minimum qualifying standard.
- After this come document verification and the medical examination.
RRB Group D stages
- One CBT of 100 questions in 90 minutes.
- Subjects: General Science, Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness and Current Affairs.
- General Science is at Class 10 level (physics, chemistry, life sciences). It is a big scoring area.
- Shortlisted candidates take a Physical Efficiency Test (PET): carrying a weight over a fixed distance and running within a fixed time. The standards differ for men and women.
- Then document verification and the medical examination.
Marking, negative marking and normalisation
- Each question carries 1 mark.
- One-third (1/3) of a mark is cut for each wrong answer. Unanswered questions get zero.
- Example: 75 correct and 12 wrong gives 75 - 4 = 71 marks.
- Exams run in many shifts, so RRB normalises marks across shifts.
- NTPC CBT 1
- 100 Q, 90 min, qualifying
- NTPC CBT 2
- 120 Q, 90 min, merit
- Group D CBT
- 100 Q, 90 min
- Negative marking
- 1/3 mark per wrong answer
- CBAT
- Station Master, Traffic Assistant
- Typing test
- Typist / clerk-typist posts
- PET
- Group D only (weight carrying + running)
💡 Choose your post preferences only after checking the medical standard. A post needing perfect eyesight is a waste of a preference if you wear strong glasses.
