1. Land, Districts, Relief, Rivers and Climate

Madhya Pradesh is called the 'Heart of India' because it lies in the centre of the country. It is a land of plateaus, hill ranges and great rivers.

Size, borders and districts

  • MP is the second largest state of India by area (about 3.08 lakh sq km), after Rajasthan.
  • It shares borders with five states: Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. It has no coastline and no international border.
  • As of 2026 MP has 55 districts in 10 divisions. The newest districts are Mauganj, Pandhurna and Maihar (created in 2023).
  • The 10 divisions are Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal, Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar and Shahdol.
  • Census 2011: population about 7.26 crore; Indore was the most populous district. The Tropic of Cancer passes through the state.

Relief: plateaus and ranges

  • The Malwa plateau in the west has fertile black soil and towns such as Indore, Ujjain and Dewas.
  • The Vindhya range lies north of the Narmada; the Satpura range lies between the Narmada and the Tapti.
  • Dhupgarh (about 1,350 m) near Pachmarhi in the Satpura range is the highest point in MP. Pachmarhi is called the 'Queen of Satpura'.
  • Other regions: Bundelkhand in the north, Baghelkhand in the north-east, Nimar in the Narmada valley and the Chambal ravines in the north-west.
  • Amarkantak, on the Maikal hills in Anuppur district, is the source of the Narmada and the Son.

Rivers and dams

  • The Narmada, the 'lifeline of MP', rises at Amarkantak and flows west through a rift valley into the Gulf of Khambhat. The Marble Rocks and Dhuandhar Falls are at Bhedaghat near Jabalpur.
  • The Tapti rises at Multai (Betul) and flows west. The Chambal rises near Mhow (Indore district) and flows north to join the Yamuna.
  • The Betwa and Ken flow north to the Yamuna; the Son flows north-east to the Ganga. The Ken-Betwa Link Project, India's first river-linking project, had its foundation stone laid at Khajuraho on 25 December 2024.
  • Indira Sagar dam (Khandwa district) on the Narmada has one of India's largest reservoirs. Omkareshwar and Bargi (Jabalpur) are other Narmada dams.
  • Gandhi Sagar (Mandsaur) is on the Chambal; Bansagar is on the Son; Tawa dam is in Narmadapuram district.
  • Climate: tropical monsoon type, with hot summers and most rain from the south-west monsoon. The east and south-east get more rain than the north-west.

2. Forests, Tiger Reserves, Cheetahs and Wetlands

Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover of any Indian state and the highest number of tigers. It is also the home of India's cheetah reintroduction project.

Forests

  • According to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, MP has the largest forest cover of any state, about 77,000 sq km.
  • Teak forests are common in the south and west; sal forests are found in the east (Mandla, Balaghat, Dindori, Shahdol).
  • Tendu leaves (used for making bidis) are an important minor forest produce collected by tribal families.
  • State symbols: state animal Barasingha (swamp deer), state bird Dudhraj (Indian paradise flycatcher), state tree Banyan (Bargad). Malkhamb is the state sport.

Tiger State of India

  • In the All India Tiger Estimation 2022, MP had 785 tigers, the highest of any state, so it is called the 'Tiger State'.
  • MP has 9 tiger reserves: Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura, Panna, Sanjay-Dubri, Veerangana Durgavati, Ratapani and Madhav.
  • Veerangana Durgavati (Sagar-Damoh-Narsinghpur area) was notified in 2023, Ratapani (near Bhopal) in December 2024 and Madhav (Shivpuri) in March 2025 as India's 58th tiger reserve.
  • Kanha (Mandla-Balaghat) is famous for saving the hard-ground Barasingha. Bandhavgarh (Umaria) is known for a high density of tigers.
  • The first white tiger, Mohan, was found in the Rewa region in 1951. The Mukundpur White Tiger Safari is near Rewa.

Cheetahs, other parks and wetlands

  • Under Project Cheetah, eight cheetahs from Namibia were released in Kuno National Park (Sheopur) on 17 September 2022. More came from South Africa in 2023.
  • In April 2025 cheetahs were also moved to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary (Mandsaur-Neemuch), the second home for cheetahs in India.
  • On 28 February 2026, nine cheetahs (six females and three males) from Botswana arrived at Kuno.
  • MP has 5 Ramsar sites: Bhoj Wetland (Bhopal, 2002), Sakhya Sagar (Shivpuri, 2022), Sirpur Lake (Indore, 2022), Yashwant Sagar (Indore, 2022) and Tawa Reservoir (Narmadapuram, 2024).
  • Other protected areas: the National Chambal Sanctuary (gharials and dolphins), Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal, and the Ghatigaon sanctuary for the Great Indian Bustard (birds rarely seen now).

3. The Economy of Madhya Pradesh

Agriculture is the backbone of Madhya Pradesh. The state is also rich in minerals and is growing in industry and renewable energy.

Size of the economy

  • As per the state budget (via PRS), MP's GSDP for 2026-27 is projected at about Rs 18.48 lakh crore at current prices, about 11 percent higher than 2025-26.
  • Per capita GSDP in 2024-25 was about Rs 1.70 lakh at current prices.
  • The state declared 2025 the 'Year of Industries' and 2026 the 'Krishak Kalyan Varsh' (Farmers' Welfare Year).
  • Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Gwalior are the main economic centres. Indore is the state's commercial capital.

Agriculture

  • MP is one of India's leading soybean producers and is traditionally called the 'Soya State'. Indore has the ICAR soybean research institute.
  • MP is a leading producer of wheat and pulses, especially gram (chickpea). Sharbati wheat of Sehore has a GI tag.

  • Kadaknath chicken of Jhabua and Chinnor rice of Balaghat have GI tags.
  • The Bhavantar scheme pays farmers the gap between the MSP and the market price for some crops; it was used for soybean in 2025 and extended to mustard in 2026.

Minerals and energy

  • Panna district has Majhgawan, India's only mechanised diamond mine, run by NMDC.
  • Malanjkhand (Balaghat) has one of India's largest open-cast copper mines. Balaghat is also a major manganese area.
  • Singrauli is called the 'Energy Capital of India' for its coal and power plants. NTPC Vindhyachal there is India's largest thermal power station.
  • The Rewa Ultra Mega Solar project (750 MW) supplies power to, among others, the Delhi Metro.
  • The Omkareshwar floating solar project on the Narmada reservoir in Khandwa district is among the largest floating solar projects in India.

Industry

  • Pithampur (Dhar district), near Indore, is a major automobile hub, often called the 'Detroit of India' in MP general knowledge books. Mandideep near Bhopal is another industrial area.
  • Other units: BHEL (Bhopal), Security Paper Mill (Narmadapuram), Bank Note Press (Dewas) and ordnance factories at Jabalpur.
