1. Paper 2 Pattern, Marking and Time Plan
Many Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) recruitment exams for Group C posts, such as Village Administrative Officer (VAO), have two papers. Paper 1 is General Knowledge. Paper 2 tests General Kannada, General English and Computer Knowledge. This lesson explains the Paper 2 pattern and how to plan for it. Always confirm the details in the official notification for your post.
The Paper 2 pattern (as published for 2026 KEA Group C exams such as VAO)
- Paper 2 has 100 objective (multiple-choice) questions for 100 marks.
- The time allowed is 2 hours (120 minutes).
- Marks split: General Kannada 35, General English 35, Computer Knowledge 30.
- Questions are answered on an OMR sheet. Read the instructions on the sheet and the admit card carefully.
- Patterns can change from one recruitment to another. Check the notification on the KEA website (cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea) for your post.
Negative marking
- For every wrong answer, one quarter (0.25) of the marks for that question is deducted.
- So 4 wrong answers cancel 1 correct answer.
- An unanswered question normally gets zero, not a minus. Confirm this rule in your notification.
- Example: 70 correct and 12 wrong gives 70 - (12 x 0.25) = 70 - 3 = 67 marks.
- Blind guessing hurts. But if you can remove two wrong options with confidence, a guess between the other two is usually worth it.
How to split your 120 minutes
- General Kannada (35 questions): about 35 minutes.
- General English (35 questions): about 35 minutes. Keep reading comprehension for the end of this part.
- Computer Knowledge (30 questions): about 25 minutes. Many questions are direct facts, so this part is fast.
- Keep the last 20-25 minutes for doubtful questions and for checking your OMR bubbles.
- Do the easy questions first. Mark the hard ones and come back. Do not spend more than 1.5 minutes on any one question in the first round.
How this course maps to Paper 2
- General Kannada (35 marks): the Kannada part of this course covers grammar (sandhi, samasa, vibhakti), vocabulary, proverbs and idioms, and literature basics.
- A separate module prepares you for the Compulsory Kannada Language Test, which some candidates must pass. Check your notification to see whether it applies to you.
- General English (35 marks): Modules 2 and 3 cover grammar, vocabulary, idioms, para jumbles, cloze tests and comprehension.
- Computer Knowledge (30 marks): Module 4 covers fundamentals, Windows, MS Office, internet, cyber security and Karnataka e-governance.
- Every lesson ends with 5 exam-style questions. Practise them under time pressure.
