1. The Compulsory Kannada Language Test: Rules and Strategy
Karnataka government jobs need a working knowledge of Kannada. Candidates who did not study Kannada at SSLC level must pass a compulsory Kannada language test (ಕಡ್ಡಾಯ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷಾ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ). It is a qualifying test: you must pass it, but its marks do not add to your rank. Always confirm details in your own KEA notification.
Marks and nature of the test
- The test is for 150 marks. The qualifying mark is 50 out of 150.
- It is only qualifying. Your merit (rank) comes from Paper 1 and Paper 2, not from this test.
- In recent KEA tests (for example the 22 August 2026 test for VAO and other posts) it was an objective multiple-choice test of 100 questions in 2 hours, so each question carried 1.5 marks.
- If you do not clear it, you are not selected even with a high score in Paper 1 and Paper 2.
- Exam date, duration and format are given in each KEA notification and admit card. Read them, because they can change.
Who must take it and who is exempt
- Generally exempt: candidates who passed SSLC (or an equivalent or higher exam) with Kannada as first or second language.
- Also generally exempt: those who studied and passed in Kannada medium, and those who already passed a Kannada language test held by KPSC, KEA or another selecting authority.
- Usually required: candidates from outside Karnataka, and others who did not study Kannada at that level; for example, the 2026 KEA test covered such applicants for posts like VAO and Land Surveyor.
- You must upload proof of exemption (marks card or earlier pass certificate) when you apply, as the notification asks.
- If you are not sure whether you are exempt, write the test. Missing it is costlier than taking it.
Where Kannada sits in KEA Paper 2
- In recent KEA recruitments, Paper 1 is General Knowledge (100 marks) and Paper 2 is General Kannada, General English and Computer Knowledge (100 marks).
- Recent notifications split Paper 2 as 35 marks General Kannada, 35 marks General English and 30 marks Computer Knowledge.
- Wrong answers can carry negative marks (recent KEA rules: one quarter of the marks of that question). Do not guess wildly.
- The grammar, vocabulary and literature lessons in this course serve both Paper 2 Kannada and the compulsory test.
- Check the exact split, question count and negative marking in the notification for your post.
- Total marks
- 150
- Qualifying mark
- 50
- Counts in merit?
- No - qualifying only
- Exempt
- SSLC with Kannada (1st/2nd language), Kannada medium, or earlier pass
- Paper 2 split (recent)
- 35 Kannada + 35 English + 30 Computer
- Negative mark (recent)
- 1/4 of the question's marks
💡 Aim well above 50, not just at 50. With one-quarter negative marking, five careless guesses can wipe out more than one correct answer. Answer what you know first, then go back.
