1. ಸಮಾನಾರ್ಥಕ, ವಿರುದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಕ, ನಾನಾರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ತತ್ಸಮ-ತದ್ಭವ

Word questions are quick marks. They test whether you know other words with the same meaning (ಸಮಾನಾರ್ಥಕ), the opposite word (ವಿರುದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಕ), words with many meanings (ನಾನಾರ್ಥ) and the Sanskrit word behind a changed Kannada form (ತತ್ಸಮ-ತದ್ಭವ).

ಸಮಾನಾರ್ಥಕ ಪದಗಳು (synonyms)

  • ಸೂರ್ಯ (sun): ರವಿ, ಭಾನು, ದಿನಕರ, ನೇಸರ.

2. ಗಾದೆಗಳು, ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟುಗಳು, ಶುದ್ಧ ರೂಪ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಕ್ಯ ತಿದ್ದುವಿಕೆ

Proverbs (ಗಾದೆ) and idioms (ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟು) carry meanings that are not literal. Exams also ask you to spot the correctly spelt word (ಶುದ್ಧ ರೂಪ) and the correct sentence. These need regular reading more than rules.

ಗಾದೆಗಳು (proverbs) and their meanings

  • ಕೈ ಕೆಸರಾದರೆ ಬಾಯಿ ಮೊಸರು - if you work hard (hands get muddy), you will eat well; hard work brings reward.
  • ಹಾಸಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲು ಚಾಚು - stretch your legs only as far as the bed; live within your means.
  • ಅತಿ ಆಸೆ ಗತಿಗೇಡು - too much greed leads to ruin. ಹಿತ್ತಲ ಗಿಡ ಮದ್ದಲ್ಲ - what is close at home is not valued.
  • ಕುಣಿಯಲಾರದವಳು ನೆಲ ಡೊಂಕು ಅಂದಳು - one who cannot dance blames the floor; blaming others for one's own weakness.
  • ತುಂಬಿದ ಕೊಡ ತುಳುಕುವುದಿಲ್ಲ - a full pot does not spill; truly learned people do not show off.
  • ದೂರದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ನುಣ್ಣಗೆ - distant hills look smooth; things look better from far away.

ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟುಗಳು (idioms)

  • ಕೈ ಕೊಡು - to let someone down at the last moment. ಬೆನ್ನು ತಟ್ಟು - to encourage.

3. Comprehension and Kannada Literature Facts

Most papers include a short Kannada passage with questions, plus a few general questions on Kannada literature: the oldest works, the great poets, the Vachana and Dasa movements and the Jnanpith awardees. This lesson gives a reading method and the core facts.

How to answer a reading passage (ಗದ್ಯಭಾಗ)

  • Read the questions first, then the passage. You will know what to look for.
  • Answer only from the passage, not from your own opinion or general knowledge.
  • For 'ಸೂಕ್ತ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ' (suitable title), choose the option that covers the whole passage, not one detail.
  • Watch for words like ಮಾತ್ರ (only), ಎಲ್ಲ (all), ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ (always); a small word can make an option wrong.
  • Practise daily with one Kannada newspaper editorial or a Class 8-10 Kannada textbook lesson.

Oldest works and the great poets

  • ಹಲ್ಮಿಡಿ ಶಾಸನ: the oldest known Kannada inscription, about 450 CE, from the Kadamba period; found at Halmidi village, Belur taluk, Hassan district. (A Kannada inscription found at Talagunda in 2017 is claimed by some to be older, but exams still answer Halmidi.)
  • ಕವಿರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗ: the oldest available Kannada literary work (on poetics), about 850 CE, by ಶ್ರೀವಿಜಯ in the court of the Rashtrakuta king Amoghavarsha Nripatunga.
  • ವಡ್ಡಾರಾಧನೆ by ಶಿವಕೋಟ್ಯಾಚಾರ್ಯ (about 10th century) is the earliest available Kannada prose work.
ಕೇಶಿರಾಜ wrote the grammar ಶಬ್ದಮಣಿದರ್ಪಣ (13th century).
  • Kannada was declared a Classical Language by the Government of India in 2008 (along with Telugu).

Vachana, Dasa sahitya and the Jnanpith

  • ವಚನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ (12th century): ಬಸವಣ್ಣ (ಅಂಕಿತ ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ), ಅಕ್ಕಮಹಾದೇವಿ (ಚೆನ್ನಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ), ಅಲ್ಲಮಪ್ರಭು (ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರ). The ಅನುಭವ ಮಂಟಪ was their forum.
  • Jnanpith awardees in Kannada (8):
