1. Police Constable: Posts, Stages and Exam Pattern
Karnataka State Police recruits thousands of constables in most years. Civil Police Constables (CPC) work in police stations. Armed constables serve in the District Armed Reserve (DAR) and City Armed Reserve (CAR). Special Reserve Police Constables serve in the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP). In 2026 the written tests were conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA): the Civil Police Constable test on 2 August 2026 (3,991 posts) and the KSRP/IRB/KSISF constable test on 20 September 2026. This lesson explains the pattern in general terms. Always check the notification for your post.
Who can apply (broad picture)
- For Civil Police Constable and for the 2026 KSRP/IRB/KSISF posts, the qualification was a pass in 2nd PUC (Class 12) or equivalent. Some earlier armed-police notifications accepted SSLC, so check yours.
- The minimum age is 18. The upper limit depends on the post and your category, and it is given in each notification along with any relaxation.
- You must meet physical standards: a minimum height (lower for women and for some notified groups) and, for men, a minimum chest measurement with expansion.
- Posts are split into Residual Parent Cadre and Kalyana Karnataka cadre (Article 371J). Separate posts are reserved for women, ex-servicemen and other groups as notified.
The written test
- The written test is an objective (multiple-choice) paper on an OMR sheet: 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes, as in the 2026 CPC test.
- Topics include general knowledge, current affairs, general science, history, geography, the Constitution, the national movement, mental ability (reasoning and simple maths) and moral education.
- There is negative marking for wrong answers. The exact deduction is stated in the notification for your post, so read it before the exam.
- The paper is given in Kannada and English. The level is broadly SSLC to PUC standard.
- Merit for final selection is decided by the written test marks. The physical tests are qualifying.
Physical tests (PST and ET)
- In 2026, candidates who did well in the written test were called to the Physical Standard Test (PST) and Endurance Test (ET); for CPC the shortlist was in a 1:2 ratio.
- PST checks height, and chest for men, against the notified standards. It is pass or fail.
- ET (also called PET) usually includes a timed run and field events such as long jump, high jump and shot put. Distances and qualifying times differ for men and women and are given in the notification.
- You must clear the events as stated in the notification. ET is qualifying only.
- After the physical tests come document verification, a medical examination and police verification.
