1. ಅಕ್ಷರಮಾಲೆ, ಕಾಗುಣಿತ ಮತ್ತು ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ (Alphabet, Vowel Signs and Conjuncts)

Every grammar question starts with letters. Here you learn how many letters the Kannada alphabet (ವರ್ಣಮಾಲೆ / ಅಕ್ಷರಮಾಲೆ) has, how they are grouped, how vowel signs join consonants (ಕಾಗುಣಿತ) and how conjunct letters (ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ) are formed.

How many letters? (as in current Karnataka school textbooks)

  • The alphabet has 49 letters: 13 ಸ್ವರ (vowels) + 2 ಯೋಗವಾಹ + 34 ವ್ಯಂಜನ (consonants).
  • ಸ್ವರಗಳು (13): ಅ ಆ ಇ ಈ ಉ ಊ ಋ ಎ ಏ ಐ ಒ ಓ ಔ.
  • ಯೋಗವಾಹಗಳು (2): ಅನುಸ್ವಾರ ( ಂ ) as in ಅಂ, and ವಿಸರ್ಗ ( ಃ ) as in ಅಃ. They can be said only with the help of a vowel.
  • ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು (34) = 25 ವರ್ಗೀಯ (grouped) + 9 ಅವರ್ಗೀಯ (ungrouped): ಯ ರ ಲ ವ ಶ ಷ ಸ ಹ ಳ.
  • Older books give other totals: Keshiraja's ಶಬ್ದಮಣಿದರ್ಪಣ (13th century) counts 47 letters, and some books add ೠ, ಌ and old letters to reach 50 or more. In exams, unless the question names another source, answer 49.

Kinds of vowels and grouped consonants

  • ಹ್ರಸ್ವ ಸ್ವರ (short, 1 ಮಾತ್ರೆ): ಅ ಇ ಉ ಋ ಎ ಒ (6).
  • ದೀರ್ಘ ಸ್ವರ (long, 2 ಮಾತ್ರೆ): ಆ ಈ ಊ ಏ ಐ ಓ ಔ (7). ಪ್ಲುತ (3 ಮಾತ್ರೆ) is a drawn-out vowel used when calling out, as in ಅಣ್ಣಾ...
  • The 25 ವರ್ಗೀಯ ವ್ಯಂಜನ are in 5 groups of 5: ಕ ವರ್ಗ (ಕ ಖ ಗ ಘ ಙ), ಚ ವರ್ಗ (ಚ ಛ ಜ ಝ ಞ), ಟ ವರ್ಗ (ಟ ಠ ಡ ಢ ಣ), ತ ವರ್ಗ (ತ ಥ ದ ಧ ನ), ಪ ವರ್ಗ (ಪ ಫ ಬ ಭ ಮ).
  • ಅಲ್ಪಪ್ರಾಣ: the 1st and 3rd letter of each group (ಕ ಗ, ಚ ಜ, ಟ ಡ, ತ ದ, ಪ ಬ) - 10 letters, said with little breath.
  • ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಣ: the 2nd and 4th letter of each group (ಖ ಘ, ಛ ಝ, ಠ ಢ, ಥ ಧ, ಫ ಭ) - 10 letters, said with more breath.
  • ಅನುನಾಸಿಕ: the 5th letter of each group (ಙ ಞ ಣ ನ ಮ) - 5 nasal letters.

ಕಾಗುಣಿತ and ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ

  • ಕಾಗುಣಿತ (ಗುಣಿತಾಕ್ಷರ): a consonant joined with each vowel sign: ಕ ಕಾ ಕಿ ಕೀ ಕು ಕೂ ಕೃ ಕೆ ಕೇ ಕೈ ಕೊ ಕೋ ಕೌ ಕಂ ಕಃ.
  • A consonant without any vowel is written with a ಹಲಂತ / ಅರ್ಧಾಕ್ಷರ mark, for example ಕ್, ನ್, ಮ್.
  • ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ / ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷರ: two or more consonants joined with one vowel at the end, for example ಕ್ + ಕ = ಕ್ಕ.
  • ಸಜಾತೀಯ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷರ: the same consonant doubled - ಅಕ್ಕ (akka), ಅಮ್ಮ (amma), ಹುಲ್ಲು (hullu).
  • ವಿಜಾತೀಯ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷರ: different consonants joined - ಸ್ನೇಹ (sneha), ಪದ್ಮ (padma), ವಿದ್ಯೆ (vidye).
  • ಅರ್ಕಾವೊತ್ತು: the ರ್ sound before a consonant is written as a sign after the letter, as in ಸೂರ್ಯ (soorya), ಕಾರ್ಯ (kaarya).

2. ಸಂಧಿ (Sandhi): Kannada and Sanskrit Sandhis

ಸಂಧಿ means the joining of two sounds when two words (or a word and a suffix) come together without a pause. Kannada has its own three sandhis, and Kannada also uses Sanskrit sandhis for Sanskrit words. Exams give a word and ask you to split it or to name the sandhi.

Kannada sandhis (ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಧಿಗಳು)

  • ಲೋಪ ಸಂಧಿ: when a vowel is followed by a vowel, the first vowel drops if the meaning stays clear. ಊರು + ಅನ್ನು = ಊರನ್ನು; ಮಾತು + ಇಲ್ಲ = ಮಾತಿಲ್ಲ; ಬೇರೆ + ಒಬ್ಬ = ಬೇರೊಬ್ಬ.
  • ಆಗಮ ಸಂಧಿ: when dropping a vowel would spoil the meaning, a new letter (ಯ or ವ) comes in between.
  • ಆದೇಶ ಸಂಧಿ: in a compound, ಕ ತ ಪ at the start of the second word change to ಗ ದ ಬ. ಮಳೆ + ಕಾಲ = ಮಳೆಗಾಲ; ಬೆಟ್ಟ + ತಾವರೆ = ಬೆಟ್ಟದಾವರೆ; ಕಣ್ + ಪನಿ = ಕಂಬನಿ.

Sanskrit vowel sandhis (ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸ್ವರ ಸಂಧಿಗಳು)

  • ಸವರ್ಣದೀರ್ಘ ಸಂಧಿ: two similar vowels join to make one long vowel.
  • ಯಣ್ ಸಂಧಿ: ಇ/ಈ, ಉ/ಊ, ಋ followed by a different vowel become ಯ್, ವ್, ರ್. ಅತಿ + ಅಂತ = ಅತ್ಯಂತ; ಇತಿ + ಆದಿ = ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ; ಮನು + ಅಂತರ = ಮನ್ವಂತರ; ಪಿತೃ + ಅರ್ಜಿತ = ಪಿತ್ರಾರ್ಜಿತ.

Sanskrit consonant sandhis (ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ವ್ಯಂಜನ ಸಂಧಿಗಳು)

  • ಜಶ್ತ್ವ ಸಂಧಿ: ಕ ಚ ಟ ತ ಪ change to ಗ ಜ ಡ ದ ಬ before a vowel or a soft consonant. ವಾಕ್ + ದೇವಿ = ವಾಗ್ದೇವಿ; ದಿಕ್ + ಅಂತ = ದಿಗಂತ; ಷಟ್ + ಆನನ = ಷಡಾನನ; ಸತ್ + ಆನಂದ = ಸದಾನಂದ.
  • ಶ್ಚುತ್ವ ಸಂಧಿ: ಸ or a ತ-ವರ್ಗ letter next to ಶ or a ಚ-ವರ್ಗ letter becomes ಶ or ಚ-ವರ್ಗ. ಮನಸ್ + ಶುದ್ಧಿ = ಮನಶ್ಶುದ್ಧಿ; ಸತ್ + ಚರಿತ್ರ = ಸಚ್ಚರಿತ್ರ; ಶರತ್ + ಚಂದ್ರ = ಶರಚ್ಚಂದ್ರ.
  • ಅನುನಾಸಿಕ ಸಂಧಿ: ಕ ಚ ಟ ತ ಪ before a nasal (ಙ ಞ ಣ ನ ಮ) become the nasal of their own group. ವಾಕ್ + ಮಯ = ವಾಙ್ಮಯ; ಷಟ್ + ಮುಖ = ಷಣ್ಮುಖ; ಚಿತ್ + ಮಯ = ಚಿನ್ಮಯ; ಜಗತ್ + ನಾಥ = ಜಗನ್ನಾಥ.
  • Rule of thumb: Kannada sandhis join Kannada words or a word with a Kannada suffix; Sanskrit sandhis join two Sanskrit words.
Quick facts

💡 To name a sandhi, first split the word correctly, then look only at the joining point: a new ಯ/ವ = ಆಗಮ; ಕ/ತ/ಪ turned into ಗ/ದ/ಬ = ಆದೇಶ (Kannada) or ಜಶ್ತ್ವ (Sanskrit); a new ಏ/ಓ = ಗುಣ; a new ಐ/ಔ = ವೃದ್ಧಿ.

3. ಸಮಾಸ (Samasa): Compound Words

ಸಮಾಸ means joining two or more meaningful words into one word, dropping the case endings in between. The first word is ಪೂರ್ವಪದ, the second is ಉತ್ತರಪದ, and the sentence that explains the compound is the ವಿಗ್ರಹವಾಕ್ಯ. Exams usually give a compound and ask its type.

Samasas decided by which word is important

  • ತತ್ಪುರುಷ ಸಮಾಸ: the meaning of the second word (ಉತ್ತರಪದ) is main; the first word has a case relation to it. ಅರಸನ + ಮನೆ = ಅರಮನೆ; ಮರದ + ಕಾಲು = ಮರಗಾಲು.
  • ಕರ್ಮಧಾರಯ ಸಮಾಸ: the first word is an adjective (quality) and the second is a noun. ಕೆಂಪು + ತಾವರೆ = ಕೆಂದಾವರೆ; ಹಿರಿದು + ಮರ = ಹೆಮ್ಮರ; ಹೊಸದು + ಕನ್ನಡ = ಹೊಸಗನ್ನಡ.
  • ದ್ವಿಗು ಸಮಾಸ: the first word is a number. ಎರಡು + ಮಡಿ = ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ; ಮೂರು + ಕಣ್ಣು = ಮುಕ್ಕಣ್ಣು; ಪಂಚ + ಇಂದ್ರಿಯ = ಪಂಚೇಂದ್ರಿಯ.
  • ದ್ವಂದ್ವ ಸಮಾಸ: all words are equally important, joined like 'and'. ಗಿಡವೂ + ಮರವೂ = ಗಿಡಮರಗಳು; ಕೆರೆಯೂ + ಕಟ್ಟೆಯೂ + ಬಾವಿಯೂ = ಕೆರೆಕಟ್ಟೆಬಾವಿಗಳು; ಹಗಲೂ + ಇರುಳೂ = ಹಗಲಿರುಳು.
  • ಬಹುವ್ರೀಹಿ ಸಮಾಸ: neither word is main; together they point to a third person or thing.

Samasas special to Kannada grammar

  • ಅಂಶಿ ಸಮಾಸ: the first word shows a part (front, back, below, tip) of the whole thing in the second word. ಕಾಲಿನ + ಮುಂದು = ಮುಂಗಾಲು; ತಲೆಯ + ಹಿಂದು = ಹಿಂದಲೆ; ಕೈಯ + ಅಡಿ = ಅಂಗೈ.
  • ಕ್ರಿಯಾ ಸಮಾಸ: the first word is a noun (usually with a case ending like ಅನ್ನು) and the second word is a verb. ಮೈಯನ್ನು + ಮುಚ್ಚು = ಮೈಮುಚ್ಚು; ಕೈಯನ್ನು + ಮುಗಿ = ಕೈಮುಗಿ; ಕಣ್ಣನ್ನು + ತೆರೆ = ಕಣ್ದೆರೆ.
  • ಗಮಕ ಸಮಾಸ: the first word is a pronoun, a participle (ಕೃದಂತ) or a quality word, and the second is a noun. ಅದು + ಮರ = ಆ ಮರ; ಇದು + ಮನೆ = ಈ ಮನೆ; ಮಾಡಿದುದು + ಅಡುಗೆ = ಮಾಡಿದಡುಗೆ.
  • Joining a pure Kannada word with a Sanskrit word in a compound is treated as a fault called ಅರಿಸಮಾಸ (with some accepted exceptions).

How to find the samasa quickly

  • First write the ವಿಗ್ರಹವಾಕ್ಯ (expanded form). The expansion usually tells you the type.
  • If the expansion ends with 'ಯಾವನೋ/ಯಾವಳೋ/ಯಾವುದೋ ಅವನು/ಅವಳು/ಅದು' (who has ...), it is ಬಹುವ್ರೀಹಿ.
  • Watch the same word in two types: ಮುಕ್ಕಣ್ಣು (three eyes) is ದ್ವಿಗು, but ಮುಕ್ಕಣ್ಣ meaning Shiva is ಬಹುವ್ರೀಹಿ.
  • If the words are joined by 'ಊ ... ಊ' (and ... and) and the result is plural, it is ದ್ವಂದ್ವ.
  • If the second word is a verb (ಮುಗಿ, ತೆರೆ, ಮುಚ್ಚು), it is ಕ್ರಿಯಾ ಸಮಾಸ.

4. ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ, ಲಿಂಗ, ವಚನ, ಕಾಲ, ಅವ್ಯಯ ಮತ್ತು ಛಂದಸ್ಸು-ಅಲಂಕಾರ

This lesson covers the rest of the grammar that appears in almost every paper: case suffixes (ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ), gender, number, tense, the parts of speech, indeclinables (ಅವ್ಯಯ) and the very basics of prosody (ಛಂದಸ್ಸು) and figures of speech (ಅಲಂಕಾರ).

ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಗಳು (7 cases + ಸಂಬೋಧನೆ), shown with ರಾಮ

  • ಪಂಚಮೀ - ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ - ರಾಮನ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ (ಅಪಾದಾನ, from/because of).

  • Other textbook classes include ಪುಂನಪುಂಸಕಲಿಂಗ (ಸೂರ್ಯ, ಚಂದ್ರ), ಸ್ತ್ರೀನಪುಂಸಕಲಿಂಗ (ಭೂಮಿ) and ನಿತ್ಯನಪುಂಸಕಲಿಂಗ (ಮಗು, ಕೂಸು).
  • ವಚನ: ಏಕವಚನ (one: ಮರ, ಹುಡುಗ) and ಬಹುವಚನ (many: ಮರಗಳು, ಹುಡುಗರು). Plural suffixes include ಅರು, ಗಳು, ಂದಿರು (ಅಣ್ಣಂದಿರು).
  • ಕಾಲ (tense): ವರ್ತಮಾನ (present) - ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ; ಭೂತ (past) - ಮಾಡಿದನು; ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್ (future) - ಮಾಡುವನು (in everyday Kannada ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ is also used for the future; a time word like ನಾಳೆ makes it clear).
  • The verb must match the subject in person, gender and number: ಅವನು ಬಂದನು, ಅವಳು ಬಂದಳು, ಅದು ಬಂದಿತು, ಅವರು ಬಂದರು.

Parts of speech and ಅವ್ಯಯ

  • ನಾಮಪದ (noun): ರಾಮ, ಮೈಸೂರು, ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಸರ್ವನಾಮ (pronoun): ನಾನು, ನೀನು, ಅವನು, ಅದು, ತಾನು. ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ (verb): ಬರು, ಹೋಗು, ಓದು - ಬಂದನು, ಓದುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
  • ಅವ್ಯಯ: a word that does not change with gender, number or case.

ಛಂದಸ್ಸು and ಅಲಂಕಾರ - only the basics

  • ಲಘು (U): a short letter, 1 ಮಾತ್ರೆ. ಗುರು (—): a long letter, or a letter with ಂ/ಃ, or a letter just before an ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ - 2 ಮಾತ್ರೆ.
  • ಆದಿಪ್ರಾಸ: the same second letter repeated at the start of every line of a poem.
  • ಷಟ್ಪದಿ: a six-line stanza; there are six kinds (ಶರ, ಕುಸುಮ, ಭೋಗ, ಭಾಮಿನಿ, ಪರಿವರ್ಧಿನಿ, ವಾರ್ಧಕ). Kumaravyasa used ಭಾಮಿನಿ ಷಟ್ಪದಿ.
  • ಉಪಮಾ ಅಲಂಕಾರ (simile) has four parts. In 'ಸೀತೆಯ ಮುಖ ಕಮಲದಂತೆ ಅರಳಿತು': ಉಪಮೇಯ = ಮುಖ, ಉಪಮಾನ = ಕಮಲ, ಉಪಮಾವಾಚಕ = ಅಂತೆ, ಸಮಾನಧರ್ಮ = ಅರಳುವಿಕೆ.
  • ರೂಪಕ ಅಲಂಕಾರ (metaphor): the two are treated as one, with no 'ಅಂತೆ': 'ಸೀತೆಯ ಮುಖಕಮಲ ಅರಳಿತು'.
