1. Districts, Coastline, Rivers and Physical Features

Andhra Pradesh lies on the east coast of India along the Bay of Bengal. It has three regions: Uttarandhra (North Andhra), Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. This lesson covers districts, the coastline, rivers, projects and hills.

Districts and regions

  • Andhra Pradesh had 13 districts until April 2022, when they were reorganised into 26 districts.
  • Two more districts, Markapuram and Polavaram, were added at the end of December 2025, taking the total to 28 districts.
  • Both took effect on 31 December 2025. Polavaram district has its headquarters at Rampachodavaram; Markapuram district, carved mainly out of Prakasam district, has its headquarters at Markapuram.
  • Rayalaseema (the southern-western interior) is drought-prone. Coastal Andhra has the fertile Godavari and Krishna deltas.
  • Amaravati, the capital, lies in Guntur district on the banks of the Krishna.

Coastline

  • Under the old figures, Andhra Pradesh's coastline was about 974 km, which made it the second longest in India after Gujarat.
  • India's coastline was recently re-measured by the National Hydrographic Office with the Survey of India using a more detailed method (figures widely reported in 2024-25). India's total rose to about 11,099 km.
  • In the revised figures, Andhra Pradesh has about 1,053 km, third after Gujarat (about 2,341 km) and Tamil Nadu (about 1,069 km).
  • In an exam, read the question carefully: older question banks say 'second longest (974 km)', newer ones use the revised figure.
  • Twelve of AP's districts touch the sea, from Srikakulam in the north to Tirupati in the south.

Rivers, projects and hills

  • The Godavari, the longest river of peninsular India ('Dakshina Ganga'), flows into the Bay of Bengal through a large delta in Andhra Pradesh. Sir Arthur Cotton built the Dowleswaram anicut near Rajahmundry.
  • The Polavaram project is a multipurpose dam on the Godavari. It was declared a national project under the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
  • The Krishna flows past Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar dams and the Prakasam Barrage at Vijayawada before reaching the sea. The Tungabhadra is its main tributary.
  • Other rivers: Penna (Pennar) in the south, and Vamsadhara and Nagavali in the north.
  • The Eastern Ghats run through the state, with hills such as Nallamala, Seshachalam (Tirumala) and Velikonda. The Araku valley and Borra caves are in the Eastern Ghats near Visakhapatnam.
Quick facts
Districts (October 2026)
28 (26 from April 2022; Markapuram and Polavaram added December 2025)
Coastline (old)
About 974 km, second after Gujarat
Coastline (revised figures)
About 1,053 km, third after Gujarat and Tamil Nadu
Polavaram
On the Godavari; national project under APRA 2014
Prakasam Barrage
On the Krishna at Vijayawada
Dowleswaram anicut
Godavari; Sir Arthur Cotton
Araku valley
Eastern Ghats, near Visakhapatnam

💡 For the coastline, learn both answers and the reason: the recent re-measurement used a more detailed method. If the options include only 'second longest', choose that; if they show 1,053 km or 'third', the question uses the new data.

2. Climate, Forests, Wildlife and Lakes

Andhra Pradesh has a hot tropical climate, forests in the Eastern Ghats, a large tiger reserve and two famous lakes, Kolleru and Pulicat. These are common one-mark questions.

Climate and rainfall

  • The state has a hot, tropical climate. Summers (March to June) are very hot, especially in Rayalaseema and coastal plains.
  • Most of the state gets rain from the south-west monsoon (June to September). The coastal districts also get rain from the north-east monsoon (October to December).
  • The coast is often hit by cyclones from the Bay of Bengal, mostly in the October to December season.
  • Rayalaseema, especially Anantapur, gets low rainfall and is drought-prone.

Forests, tiger reserve and wildlife

  • The Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, in the Nallamala hills along the Krishna, is one of the largest tiger reserves in India.
  • Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary near Kakinada protects mangrove forests in the Godavari delta.
  • Papikonda National Park is in the Godavari gorge area of the Eastern Ghats. Sri Venkateswara National Park is in the Seshachalam hills near Tirupati.
  • Red sanders (red sandalwood), a valuable endemic tree, grows in the Seshachalam forests.
  • Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary in Rayalaseema was set up to protect the Great Indian Bustard. Nelapattu near Pulicat is a famous bird sanctuary for pelicans.

Kolleru and Pulicat lakes

  • Kolleru Lake is a large freshwater lake between the Godavari and Krishna deltas. It is a bird sanctuary and was declared a Ramsar wetland in 2002.
  • Pulicat Lake is a brackish-water lagoon on the AP-Tamil Nadu border. It is the second largest brackish-water lagoon in India after Chilika.
  • Sriharikota island, the home of India's space port, separates Pulicat Lake from the Bay of Bengal.
  • Both lakes face threats from encroachment, aquaculture ponds and silting.

💡 Remember the lake pair by water type: Kolleru is fresh water between two deltas; Pulicat is salty-brackish on the Tamil Nadu border next to Sriharikota.

3. The Andhra Pradesh Economy

Agriculture, aquaculture, ports and industry drive the AP economy. This lesson covers the rice bowl, fisheries, ports, Sriharikota, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, the new railway zone and recent investments.

Agriculture and aquaculture

  • The Godavari and Krishna deltas make Andhra Pradesh the 'rice bowl of India'. Rice is the main food crop.
  • Other crops include chillies (Guntur is famous for chillies), cotton, groundnut (Rayalaseema), tobacco, turmeric, sugarcane, coconut and mangoes.
  • Andhra Pradesh is a leading state in fish and shrimp production, especially farmed (aquaculture) shrimp from the coastal districts.
  • Horticulture is strong in Rayalaseema, including fruits like banana, sweet orange and mango.

Ports, space and industry

  • Visakhapatnam Port is the only major port (under the Centre) in Andhra Pradesh and one of the biggest on the east coast.
  • Other important ports include Krishnapatnam (Nellore), Gangavaram (near Visakhapatnam) and Kakinada. New ports are being developed at Ramayapatnam, Machilipatnam and Mulapeta.
  • The Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC SHAR) at Sriharikota, in Tirupati district, is ISRO's main rocket launch centre.
  • The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, run by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), is India's first shore-based integrated steel plant.
  • Sri City (Tirupati district) is a major industrial park, and the Kia car plant is at Penukonda (Sri Sathya Sai district).

Railway zone, airport and new investments

  • The South Coast Railway zone, headquartered at Visakhapatnam, started operations on 1 June 2026. It has the Guntakal, Guntur, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam divisions.
  • The new zone was promised under the AP Reorganisation Act process and announced by the Centre in February 2019.
  • Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram (Vizianagaram district) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 August 2026. Commercial flights began on 17 August 2026.
  • In October 2025, the state signed an agreement with Google for an AI hub and data centre in Visakhapatnam, with a planned investment of about 15 billion US dollars.
  • The AP Budget 2026-27 projects the state's GSDP at about Rs 19.75 lakh crore at current prices, with 12% growth.
