1. Land, Districts, Regions, Rivers and Climate

Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state and its fourth largest by area. Most of it is the flat, fertile plain of the Ganga and its tributaries. This lesson covers the basic facts about its size, borders, divisions, regions and rivers.

Size, borders and divisions

  • Area: about 2,40,928 sq km, fourth largest among states (after Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra).
  • Population (Census 2011): about 19.98 crore, the largest of any state.
  • UP borders Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. It also shares an international border with Nepal.
  • Seven districts touch Nepal: Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj.
  • UP has 75 districts grouped into 18 divisions (mandals). The capital is Lucknow.
  • In 2018, Allahabad district was renamed Prayagraj and Faizabad district was renamed Ayodhya.

Natural regions

  • Bhabar and Terai: a narrow belt along the northern border at the foot of the Himalayas. The Terai is marshy, with tall grass and forests (Dudhwa, Pilibhit).
  • Gangetic plain: the largest region, with deep alluvial soil. Newer alluvium near rivers is called khadar; older, higher alluvium is called bangar.
  • Southern plateau: Bundelkhand (Jhansi, Lalitpur, Banda, Chitrakoot and nearby) and the Vindhyan area of Mirzapur and Sonbhadra. The land is rocky and dry.
  • Sonbhadra has coal and limestone and many power stations, such as Anpara, Obra and Rihand. It is often called the energy capital of UP.
  • The Rihand Dam in Sonbhadra forms the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar reservoir.

Rivers

  • Ganga: enters the UP plains in the west (Bijnor area) and flows east past Kanpur, Prayagraj and Varanasi into Bihar.
  • Yamuna: flows past Mathura and Agra and joins the Ganga at Prayagraj (the Sangam). The Chambal, Betwa and Ken join the Yamuna from the south.
  • Ghaghara (called Karnali in Nepal): a large left-bank tributary of the Ganga. The Sharda (Kali) joins it and forms part of the India-Nepal border.
  • Gomti: rises near Pilibhit, flows through Lucknow and Jaunpur, and joins the Ganga near Varanasi.
  • Betwa: rises in Madhya Pradesh and joins the Yamuna near Hamirpur. The Ken-Betwa river link project connects it with the Ken.
  • Other rivers: Rapti (Gorakhpur), Son (Sonbhadra), Ramganga (Moradabad, Bareilly).

2. Forests, Wildlife and Wetlands

Most of Uttar Pradesh is farmland, but the Terai forests of the north and the dry forests of the south shelter tigers, swamp deer, gharials and many birds. UP also has many protected wetlands. This lesson lists the parks and sites exams ask about.

National park and tiger reserves

  • Dudhwa National Park (Lakhimpur Kheri) is the only national park in UP. It is famous for tigers, the swamp deer (barasingha) and the one-horned rhinoceros brought back there.
  • UP has four tiger reserves: Dudhwa, Pilibhit, Amangarh and Ranipur.
  • Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (notified 2014) won the international TX2 award in 2020 for doubling its tiger numbers.
  • Amangarh Tiger Reserve (Bijnor) lies next to Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand.
  • Ranipur Tiger Reserve (Chitrakoot), notified in 2022, is UP's fourth tiger reserve and the first in UP's part of Bundelkhand.

Other sanctuaries

  • National Chambal Sanctuary protects the gharial and the river dolphin. It is shared by UP, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
  • Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (Bahraich) and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary are part of the Dudhwa landscape.
  • Okhla Bird Sanctuary lies on the Yamuna in Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida).
  • Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary in Unnao has been renamed after Chandra Shekhar Azad.
  • State symbols: animal barasingha (swamp deer), bird sarus crane, tree ashoka, flower palash.

Ramsar wetlands

  • The Upper Ganga River stretch from Brijghat to Narora was UP's first Ramsar site (2005).
  • Sites added in 2019 and 2020 include Nawabganj, Parvati Arga, Saman, Samaspur, Sandi, Sarsai Nawar and Sur Sarovar (Keetham Lake, Agra).
  • Haiderpur Wetland and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary were added in 2021, taking UP to 10 sites.
  • More UP wetlands were added in 2026, such as Patna Bird Sanctuary (Etah) and Shekha Jheel (Aligarh). The total keeps changing, so check the latest count before your exam.
  • Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention (1971).

3. The Economy of Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is one of India's largest state economies. It leads the country in many farm products and has built a large network of expressways. This lesson uses figures from UP's first Economic Survey (2025-26) and the 2026-27 budget.

Size of the economy

  • UP presented its first-ever state Economic Survey (2025-26) on 9 February 2026.
  • As per the survey, UP's GSDP was about Rs 30.25 lakh crore in 2024-25, up from about Rs 13.30 lakh crore in 2016-17.
  • Per capita income in 2024-25 was about Rs 1,09,844 as per the survey, which is still below the national average.
  • The 2026-27 budget estimates GSDP at about Rs 39.8 lakh crore. The state government's stated goal is a one trillion dollar economy.
  • The state holds investor summits and ground-breaking ceremonies to attract investment.

Agriculture and dairy

  • UP is India's largest producer of foodgrains (about 20.6% of the national total, as per the Economic Survey).
  • UP is the largest producer of wheat, sugarcane, potato and milk in India. It produces about 15.7% of India's milk.
  • Western UP (Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur) is the main sugarcane belt. Agra and Farrukhabad are known for potatoes.
  • Kalanamak rice of eastern UP (Siddharthnagar and nearby) and Malihabadi Dussehri mango (Lucknow) are famous GI products.

Industry, expressways and airports

  • Major industrial areas: Noida and Greater Noida (electronics, mobile phones, IT), Kanpur (leather), Agra (leather and footwear), Moradabad (metalware), Bhadohi (carpets).
  • UP Defence Industrial Corridor has six nodes: Agra, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Kanpur and Lucknow. A BrahMos missile facility opened in Lucknow in 2025.
  • Expressways: Yamuna (Greater Noida to Agra, 165 km), Agra-Lucknow (302 km), Purvanchal (Lucknow to Ghazipur, 341 km, 2021) and Bundelkhand (Chitrakoot to Etawah, 296 km, 2022).
  • Ganga Expressway: 594 km from Meerut to Prayagraj through 12 districts, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 29 April 2026 at Hardoi. It is UP's longest expressway and has a 3.5 km airstrip in Shahjahanpur for Air Force planes.
  • Noida International Airport at Jewar (Gautam Buddha Nagar): Phase I was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 28 March 2026, and commercial flights began on 15 June 2026.
  • Other international airports include Lucknow, Varanasi, Kushinagar and Ayodhya.
