1. What Part A Tamil Covers: Grammar and Literature

Part A is 100 questions on Tamil at SSLC (Class 10) standard. It tests grammar (இலக்கணம்), literature (இலக்கியம்) and Tamil scholars and their works. This lesson gives an overview with standard textbook examples. Study the details from the Samacheer Kalvi Tamil textbooks.

எழுத்து (letters)

  • Tamil grammar has five parts: எழுத்து, சொல், பொருள், யாப்பு, அணி.
  • உயிர் எழுத்துகள் (vowels): 12. Short vowels (குறில்) are அ இ உ எ ஒ (5); long vowels (நெடில்) are ஆ ஈ ஊ ஏ ஐ ஓ ஔ (7).
  • மெய் எழுத்துகள் (consonants): 18, in three groups: வல்லினம் (க் ச் ட் த் ப் ற்), மெல்லினம் (ங் ஞ் ண் ந் ம் ன்), இடையினம் (ய் ர் ல் வ் ழ் ள்).
  • உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகள்: 12 x 18 = 216. ஆய்த எழுத்து: 1 (ஃ).
  • Total letters: 12 + 18 + 216 + 1 = 247.

சொல் (words) and புணர்ச்சி (joining)

  • Words are of four kinds: பெயர்ச்சொல் (noun), வினைச்சொல் (verb), இடைச்சொல் and உரிச்சொல்.
  • புணர்ச்சி is the joining of two words. It is இயல்பு புணர்ச்சி when no change happens, and விகாரப் புணர்ச்சி when a change happens.
  • The three kinds of change (விகாரம்) are தோன்றல் (a letter appears), திரிதல் (a letter changes) and கெடுதல் (a letter drops).
  • தோன்றல்: வாழை + பழம் = வாழைப்பழம் (ப் appears).
  • திரிதல்: பால் + குடம் = பாற்குடம் (ல் changes to ற்). கெடுதல்: மரம் + வேர் = மரவேர் (ம் drops).

Literature, authors and Thirukkural

  • Thirukkural (திருக்குறள்) by திருவள்ளுவர் has 133 chapters (அதிகாரம்) in three parts: அறத்துப்பால் (38), பொருட்பால் (70) and காமத்துப்பால் (25).
  • Thirukkural is also called உலகப் பொதுமறை (the universal scripture) and முப்பால். Its first couplet begins: அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.
  • ஐம்பெருங்காப்பியங்கள் (five great epics): சிலப்பதிகாரம், மணிமேகலை, சீவக சிந்தாமணி, வளையாபதி, குண்டலகேசி.
  • Other works and authors: கம்பராமாயணம் (கம்பர்), ஆத்திசூடி (ஔவையார்), பாஞ்சாலி சபதம் and குயில் பாட்டு (பாரதியார்), பாண்டியன் பரிசு and குடும்ப விளக்கு (பாரதிதாசன்).
  • Titles: பாரதியார் is மகாகவி; பாரதிதாசன் is புரட்சிக்கவிஞர் (also பாவேந்தர்); திருவள்ளுவர் is also called தெய்வப்புலவர்.

2. Strategy to Score High in Part A Tamil

Part A carries 150 of the 300 marks. A strong Tamil score can lift your rank more than any other part. This lesson gives a practical plan, including for candidates who did not study Tamil as a main language in school.

What to study

  • Use the Tamil Nadu State Board (Samacheer Kalvi) Tamil textbooks of Classes 6 to 10; most questions are based on them. Classes 11 and 12 add depth.
  • Grammar: letters, word types, புணர்ச்சி, synonyms and antonyms, sentence correction, and identifying the correct spelling.
  • Literature: authors and their works, titles of poets, famous lines, and the names of epics and collections.
  • Thirukkural: chapter names, famous couplets and their meaning; questions often ask to complete a kural or name its chapter.
  • Tamil scholars and their contributions, such as U. Ve. Saminatha Iyer (who collected and printed old palm-leaf manuscripts) and Robert Caldwell (who wrote on Dravidian languages).

How to study

  • Make separate notebooks for grammar rules, author-work pairs and Thirukkural.
  • Write out lists of author-work pairs and revise them every week; they are easy marks.
  • Practise previous TNPSC Group 4 Tamil questions. Note the patterns that repeat.
  • Read a Tamil newspaper every day to improve reading speed and vocabulary.
  • If Tamil is not your strong language, start with grammar basics, because rules give sure marks.

In the exam

  • Part A has 100 questions; aim to finish it in about 70 minutes.
  • Read every option fully. Tamil options often differ by a single letter (for example ல, ள, ழ or ன, ண, ந).
  • Remember the 40% (60 marks) qualifying mark in Part A; if you do not reach it, Part B is not evaluated.
  • Since there is no negative marking, answer every question.
