1. FDA and SDA: Posts, Eligibility and Exam Pattern

First Division Assistant (FDA) and Second Division Assistant (SDA) are the main clerical posts in Karnataka government offices. The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruits them for state government departments. In recent years the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has also recruited FDA and SDA for some boards, corporations and other bodies. This lesson explains the pattern seen in recent KPSC Group C notifications. Patterns can change, so always read the official notification for your recruitment.

The posts and who can apply (broad picture)

  • FDA is a Group C post with higher responsibility, such as handling files, accounts work and supervising SDAs. SDA is the entry-level clerical post.
  • FDA usually needs a bachelor's degree. SDA usually needs a pass in 2nd PUC (Class 12) or an equivalent qualification.
  • The minimum age is 18. The upper age limit depends on your category (General Merit, 2A/2B/3A/3B, SC/ST/Category-1), and the government sometimes gives extra one-time relaxation.
  • Posts are split into Residual Parent Cadre (RPC) and Kalyana Karnataka (Hyderabad-Karnataka) local cadre posts under Article 371J.
  • Exact qualifications, age limits, fees and reservation rules are given in each notification. Check them before you apply.

Stage 1: Compulsory Kannada Language Test

  • Candidates who did not study Kannada as a first or second language in SSLC (or an equivalent exam) must pass a Kannada Language Test.
  • The test has been of 150 marks, and the pass mark has been 50. It is qualifying only; its marks are not added to the merit list.
  • Candidates who passed SSLC or a higher exam with Kannada as a language, or who already passed an approved Kannada test, are generally exempt.
  • If you are required to take it and you fail, you cannot be selected even with high marks in the main papers.

Stage 2: Two objective written papers

  • Paper 1, General Paper (General Knowledge): 100 questions, 100 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Paper 1 covers current affairs, general science, Indian and Karnataka history, geography, the Constitution, Karnataka economy, Panchayat Raj and mental ability.
  • Paper 2, language paper: recent KPSC Group C notifications have General Kannada 35, General English 35 and Computer Knowledge 30 (100 marks, 2 hours). Older FDA/SDA cycles used a General English / General Kannada language paper without a computer section, and some guides number the papers differently (counting the Kannada test as a paper), so follow the pattern in your notification.
  • Both papers are objective multiple-choice questions answered on an OMR sheet. In recent KPSC patterns, one quarter (0.25) of the marks of a question is deducted for each wrong answer.
  • Selection is on merit from the written papers, followed by document verification. Any further stage is listed in the notification.

Official information

  • KPSC's official website is kpsc.kar.nic.in. Notifications, online applications, admit cards, keys and results are published there.
  • If your FDA/SDA recruitment is conducted by KEA, use kea.kar.nic.in and the KEA portal at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea.
  • Provisional answer keys are published after the exam, and you can raise objections within the time allowed.
  • Ignore fake job messages. Trust only the official websites and the notification PDF.

2. FDA and SDA: Study Plan and Exam Technique

FDA and SDA exams are very competitive, and the gap between selected and not selected is often only a few marks. A clear plan, regular revision and careful handling of negative marking make that difference. This lesson gives a simple plan and shows which modules in this series cover each part of the syllabus.

How the course modules map to the syllabus

  • Paper 1 history: the Ancient India, Medieval India, and Colonial Rule and the Freedom Struggle modules, plus the Karnataka history points in them.
  • Paper 1 polity and administration: The Constitution of India, How India Is Governed, and State and Territorial Administration and Panchayat Raj.
  • Paper 1 geography, science and economy: Geography of India and Karnataka, General Science, Environment and Ecology, and Karnataka Economy, Rural Development and Co-operatives.
  • Paper 1 current affairs: Karnataka Current Affairs and the free Current Affairs 2025 and 2026 courses.
  • Paper 2: the General Kannada, General English and Computer Knowledge modules. The Compulsory Kannada Language Test module is for candidates who must take that test.
  • Mental ability questions: the Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude modules (SSLC level is enough).

An 8-week plan

  • Week 1: read the notification, finish this module and attempt one previous KPSC paper to know your starting level.
  • Weeks 2 to 4: history, Constitution, Panchayat Raj and Karnataka economy, with 30 minutes of Kannada or English grammar every day.
  • Weeks 5 and 6: geography, science, computer knowledge and current affairs of the last 12 to 18 months.
  • Weeks 7 and 8: one full timed mock test every two or three days, then revise your weak areas.
  • Study every day for a fixed time. Short daily study is better than long study once a week.

Exam-hall technique

  • Paper 1 gives 90 minutes for 100 questions, a little under 1 minute per question. Answer the questions you are sure of first.
  • With 0.25 negative marking, 4 wrong answers cancel 1 right answer. Do not guess blindly among all four options.
  • If you can rule out two options with confidence, choosing between the remaining two is usually worth it.
  • Fill OMR bubbles fully and darkly. Keep the last 5 to 10 minutes to check your register number, booklet series and bubbles.
Quick facts
Paper 1 time per question
About 54 seconds (90 minutes / 100)
4 wrong answers
Cancel 1 correct answer
Blind guessing
Avoid
Two options ruled out
Guessing is usually worth it

Check OMR details and bubbles

💡 Keep a mistakes notebook. After every mock test, write each wrong answer with the correct fact, and read the notebook every Sunday.
