1. The KEA Exam Pattern for Group C Posts

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts recruitment exams for many Karnataka government posts, such as Village Administrative Officer (VAO), First and Second Division Assistants (FDA/SDA) for some departments, and other Group C posts. This lesson explains the pattern used in the 2026 VAO notification. Patterns can change from post to post, so always check the official notification for your post.

Stage 1: Compulsory Kannada Language Test

  • Candidates who must take it write a Kannada Language Test of 150 marks before (or along with) the main written exam.
  • It is a qualifying test only. As reported for 2026, the pass mark was 50 out of 150. Its marks are not added to the merit list.
  • Candidates who studied Kannada as a first or second language up to SSLC, or passed SSLC or a higher exam in Kannada medium, are generally exempt.
  • Candidates who have already passed an approved Kannada language test are also usually exempt. Check the exact exemption rules in your notification.
  • Failing this test means you are not selected, even if your written exam score is high.

Stage 2: Two objective papers

  • Paper 1, General Knowledge: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours. This course is written for Paper 1.
  • Paper 1 covers current affairs, Indian history, the Constitution, geography, economy, Karnataka history and geography, and Panchayat Raj and rural development.
  • Paper 2: General Kannada (35 marks), General English (35 marks) and Computer Knowledge (30 marks): 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours.
  • Both papers are objective multiple-choice questions with four options, answered on an OMR sheet. Question papers are usually given in both Kannada and English.
  • For every wrong answer, 0.25 (one quarter) mark is deducted. There is no deduction for a question you leave blank.
  • Merit is based on the total of Paper 1 and Paper 2 (200 marks), as per the notification.

Where to get official information

  • KEA's official website is kea.kar.nic.in. Notifications and online applications are also published on the KEA portal at cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea.
  • Download the notification PDF for your post and read the syllabus, eligibility, age limit, reservation and document rules carefully.
  • Admit cards, provisional answer keys and results are released on the KEA website. You can object to a provisional answer key within the time allowed.
  • Beware of fake websites and social media posts. Trust only the official KEA site and the notification.

How this course fits the syllabus

2. Study Plan and Exam Technique

Good preparation is not only about reading more. It is about planning your time, revising often and handling negative marking wisely in the exam hall. This lesson gives a simple plan you can follow.

Time management in the exam

  • Paper 1 has 100 questions in 120 minutes, so you get about 1 minute 12 seconds per question.
  • Do a first round and answer all the questions you are sure about. Mark doubtful ones lightly on the question paper.
  • In the second round, return to the doubtful questions. Keep the last 10 minutes to check your OMR sheet.
  • Fill OMR bubbles fully and darkly with the pen type allowed. A half-filled bubble may not be read by the machine.

When should you guess? The simple maths

  • A correct answer gives +1. A wrong answer gives minus 0.25. So four wrong answers cancel one right answer.
  • Blind guessing among all four options: on average you get 1 right and 3 wrong out of 4 guesses, which is 1 minus 0.75 = 0.25 marks for 4 questions. That is a very small gain with high risk.
  • If you can remove one wrong option, you choose from 3. On average, out of 3 guesses you get 1 right and 2 wrong: 1 minus 0.5 = 0.5 marks. Guessing now helps.
  • If you can remove two wrong options, you choose from 2: 1 right and 1 wrong gives 1 minus 0.25 = 0.75 marks per 2 questions. Guess confidently.
  • Rule of thumb: do not guess blindly, but if you can rule out at least one option, it is usually worth answering.

A 6 to 8 week study plan

  • Week 1: read the notification and syllabus; finish Module 1 and take a previous paper to know your starting level.
  • Weeks 2 to 4: Karnataka administration, Panchayat Raj, economy and co-operatives (this course), along with the history and Constitution course.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: current affairs of the last 12 to 18 months, especially Karnataka events, schemes and awards.
  • Weeks 7 and 8: full mock tests under timed conditions, then revise your weak areas.
  • Study daily for a fixed time. Two focused hours every day is better than ten hours once a week.

Smart revision

  • Use the quick-facts table at the end of each lesson. Read them again on the day before the exam.
  • Make your own one-page sheets for numbers: Articles, Acts and years, scheme benefits, and dates.
  • Solve previous KEA and KPSC papers. Questions on Panchayat Raj, Karnataka schemes and Karnataka history repeat often.
  • After each mock test, write down every wrong answer with the correct fact. Revise this list weekly.
Quick facts
Time per question
About 1 minute 12 seconds (120 minutes for 100 questions)
4 wrong answers
Cancel 1 correct answer (4 x 0.25 = 1)
Blind guess (4 options)
Small gain, high risk: avoid
One option ruled out
Guessing is usually worth it
Last 10 minutes
Check OMR bubbles and details

💡 Practise with an OMR sheet at home at least twice. Many candidates lose marks only because they fill bubbles slowly or wrongly.
